Evaluation Question 5

Evaluation Question 4

What would be the audience for your media product?

I have aimed my music magazine towards teenagers and early adult’s age group (17-19 years old), this is due to this age range being more interested in the music industry not just enjoying music but increase their social life by going to the gigs and concerts. Another reason why I have chosen this age group is due to most concerts/gigs being at this age ranch so the information provided in my magazine will appeal more to them.  The fun pop genre of music appeals to this age more as they have a wider social life so the fun theme of pop is often used in student bars at universities and at social gatherings. The age of which is a crucial time as the start of A levels and university may prevent some people from attending these events, my magazine can provide news about other gigs so my audience be more prepared and can arrange time to go to that particular event. Also with the idea of including a prize of winning tickets to a concert this would persuade my audience more, making my magazine more interesting, noticeable and working with the environment the people are working in (this applies more to university students living away from home) being able to arrange time off to go to a concert can also help relax a person allowing them to forget about their studies or exams.
Also the price of the magazine is reasonable as students would want to save money for university or while they are there, by setting a price at £3.99 the audience is receiving a variety of news and gossip each month.
My magazine is aimed more towards the female gender this is done by the layout of the front cover, the style of font, the colour scheme and the layout of the magazine itself, however sections of my magazine can appeal to both genders this is done by the list of gigs and concerts, music artists news and the other pieces of information in the magazine all of which can appeal to male and female. The social class of the audience can vary from the type of person who would prefer to stay inside focussing on their studies to the type who has a large social life of which this magazine would be best suited for as the concert locations are a big attraction for social activities.
I have included a list of top twenty songs in the week chart as this will increase the interest of my audience, the chart will allow those who cannot attend the social events can still hear about what songs are most popular also to see any new artists or songs have appeared during the week. I believe the features of which I have included in my magazine would benefit my target audience appealing to the financial side to their life and their social life my magazine provides an equal balance for my audience.

What kind of institution might distribute your media product and why?
When designing my music magazine I researched into a popular magazine known as Billboard, Billboard has a variety of media resources such as internet and magazines owned by Prometheus Global Media which is a diversified company covering the entertainment industry such as music charts, music events also involved in advertising and marketing. I believe a company like this would be interested in distributing my magazine, while Billboard covers all genres of music my magazine only focuses on the genre of Pop, also my magazine is a monthly magazine while Billboard is an American weekly magazine this means my magazine will contain more information making it more popular for people who are only interested in the facts and news in the month and following.
However a magazine such a “SPIN” could be a candidate as a distributor as it mainly covers rock music however the style of the front cover is similar to my music magazines cover, the use of poses and the position of the artist on the cover is used effectively while Billboard mainly uses a large image of the artist cropped so there is a close up on that particular artist. The layout of the text on a SPIN magazine is similar to my own, sell lines are located around the image all representing what that magazine has to offer, while in other front covers there is little use of sell lines. This shows how each magazine is different in each issue.
I believe a company such as SPIN would be interested in my magazine as they would then have two separate magazine genres one being rock/punk and the second being pop, this will allow the company to cover more of a variety of their audience and earn more of a profit in each month. Both magazines (SPIN and my own) have a different style however they are both effective in attracting their target audience. However both magazines are set at different age groups on the other hand this is a benefit as this will contribute to covering more of the public, also by the magazines being different it will make both stand out more, this is done by the layout of the magazine, its context and the image used to give a visual message of what the magazine has to offer. But compared to Billboard my music magazine would provide the audience with more information in the month but Billboard is able to cover that area with its variety of music genres and news about each one in a weekly magazine, this will put my magazine at a disadvantage and be unsuccessful in the market. I want to make my magazine stand out more compared to these two companies however each company has a positive effect and a negative effect if I used them as a distributor. I believe by going with SPIN magazine I would have a better chance of my magazine being noticed by the public and the fact they are opposite genres makes them stand out more.
Billboard have their own Youtube page this gathers more attention as Youtube is a popular site and is used by a vast majority of the public Billboard have a total of 155,001 subscribers and a total of 260,040,503 people have viewed their videos.

Question 1: In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?
My media product is based as a music magazine, I have chosen to focus on the pop genre for my magazine I have used a bright colour scheme in relation to other pop magazines which have an active background, sell lines surrounding the front cover linking to the contents inside and a large scale image of the artist as the figure is the key point in that issue. The magazine Billboard was a key influence during the construction of my magazine, during my research process this magazine ticked the boxes for what I wanted to include in my magazine. The highlight of Billboard’s style is the large scale image placed in the centre of the page making the artist noticeable to the audience thus attracting their interest.
With similarities between the styles used, my magazine is able to stand out more with the vibrant colour scheme in use and the position of my models. In my magazine I have included sell lines around my main image to show the audience the extended information located inside. My magazine relates to the pop genre as my masthead is located behind my models making them more important also to colour scheme is consistent throughout my magazine.  The use of a medium shot in my magazine shows the body language of the models in relation to the pull quote.
Like other magazines I have included a bar code clearly located on the front cover stating the UK price and the international price of the magazine.  The added use of a website for my magazine helps in relation to the dominant use of technology in everyday life by having the convenience to subscribe to my magazine the audience can receive interviews, news, gig locations and dates all from their smart phones. With the use of internet my magazine can appeal to a wider population of my target audience.
My music magazine has a consistent colour scheme of blue, yellow and white these colours were chosen in relation to main pop magazines which are usually bright , eye catching and has a busy layout. I believe my magazine covers these areas as shown with the front cover and the contents page. Sell lines are placed around my main image, this makes my cover appear more attractive as the information shows what my magazine can supply to my target audience (17-19 years).
The body language of my models relates to the pull quote ‘time to talk’ one model is smiling as seen in most pop magazines while the second model’s smile is faint this shows the two sides to my main article.
I have made my page busy and kept to my colour scheme, I have also placed my magazines logo on the top right of the page. Using bars to highlight my page numbers to make them stand out more with the added boxes for text my page shows my magazine has a lot to offer to the audience. With an added list to give the audience a taste of what is found on each page.
My magazine includes a up to date list of albums which are in the most popular in the charts this information is most popular in music magazines. I have also included a subscribe box with a image of the magazine. I have also included a subscribe box with a image of the magazine with added information to how the audience can subscribe, also I have advertised Facebook and Twitter on my pages as these popular social network sites would appeal to a variety of audiences  (my target audience and more).
Continuing my colour scheme my page has a variety of fonts and the use of these fonts makes the page attractive, I have placed my masthead design on the page keeping with the flow of my magazine. The images used on my double page relate to the ‘time to talk’ quote located on my front cover, the exclusive interview goes into depth of the artists past, present and future. The convocations are clearly separated this gives a nice flow when read. The pull quotes are located next to the images this allows them to stand out and both correspond to the positions of the models.

Diary Entry Week 13

This week I have been working on my final layout to my music magazine I am making many adjustments to my draft version to relate it more to my target audience, genre of music and they style of magazine I am aspiring to. I have used a similar style of my draft version for my final front cover but have used the colours from my colour scheme to relate it to a Pop theme, by using two main colours yellow and blue to create this effect.
I have also made a new contents page with a completly different layout compared to the draft version. To make this cover I researched into many different layouts for a front cover and fount this column version more clearer to follow. I have made sure my page layouts are realistic and would flow well together just like other music magazines.
With my contents page I have used my blue and yellow colour scheme to indicate who is speaking in the interview I believe this is most effective as the colours do not clash making the convosation flow and be clear to understand for my audience. I have also shortend the introduction to the interview and made the doouble page more about the interview than just background information and history as shown in my draft version.
I believe these changes make the magazine more professional and more realistic in relating to my origional plan.

Essay Question 2

How does your media product represent particular social groups?

My magazines represents the young generation of artists such as Taylor Swift, Adele and Katy Perry the one of my models wears bright clothing and a straw hat this gives a friendly, calm image inviting the audience in. With magazines such as Billboard the main artist covers the front cover this shows what the main article is about e.g. Taylor Swift appeared in Billboard magazine and her image overlapped the title this makes her more important than the name of the magazine. By having the name of the artist enlarged it will attract the audience more as they will recognise the name or style of that particular name, I have used this idea in my own magazine making “Monroe” enlarged and clear  this will already show my audience what my magazine has to offer. With the use of sell lines on the front cover my magazine shows how it is structured.
The back to back position of my models represents the coming of opposites one of my models wears black and symbol of a negative force while my second model wears bright clothing making her a positive force, the use of a straw hat makes the second model appear to have a relaxed personality while my first model wears glasses making her appear organised and in control. However the elbow of the second model overlaps the first this can show how the two forces are competing with each other. Both models appear fun and charming in the cover but only when the magazine is opened they take on a new look, a more confident approach. In my redesigned double page spread I will include single images of my artists to show how they look without their other half; this gives the audience another view of the artist and their true self.
On my contents page I include advertisement for social websites such as Facebook and Twitter this will allow the audience to be familiar with social groups and with the support from the bars at the bottom of my pages informing the audience to send their opinion or follow my magazine of a social network site, my magazine will be highlighted more to the public and gain more interest. Although I believe the structure of my Contents page does reflect to the theme of Pop as I have kept with a bright colour scheme similar to other Pop magazines. My magazine is aimed towards the Pop genre which means the use of bright images and colour but I believe the first draft of my magazine does represent Pop, however a lot can be done to alter it to take my magazine to a next level this will make my magazine stand out more also make a difference to my draft. I believe I need to use more colourful images and edit my backgrounds to make the pages fun and attractive.

Diary Entry Week 12

This week I have continued to redesign my background going to a more colourful design, as this will make my magazine relate more to my origional plan. Whereas before I used a negative colour tone as I wanted to include the idea for my title however I believe it does give a fun image but does not suit the bright colour pallet I had origionaly chosen.

Diary Entry Week 11

During the week I have been editing my music magazine and making improvements. I am planning to include more pages to my main article such as an extra double page spread with a more detailed interview, an added extra introduction page.
